Poked by Pam
You might be wondering what exactly does this post mean? I can confidently say I got Poked by Pam and I'll tell you all about it!
This post is actually about my newest tattoo which I am in love with. The new tattoo I am sporting is a little camera on my 'shooting' arm. Of course it makes sense that my next tattoo was a camera! I mean, its been a long time coming! What makes this tattoo special is that it was done by the old school tattooing method: The art of stick and poke.
Stick and poke is a kind of tattooing that involves using a sharp point and some ink. It’s known as the traditional way of tattooing. Using a single needle, one dips into the ink and pokes just deep enough to leave the ink right underneath the skin. There's a lot of misconceptions with stick and poke, especially towards safety and sanitary views. As long as the tattoo artist is using sterile products and knows what they're doing, you're good to go.
Pamela has been drawing for quite some time now and if you have seen her drawings you will see the talent oozing out of her. Her detailing and the designs will have you lining up wanting her to create something magical for you. Check out these designs she has recently shared!
I asked Pamela how long she had been drawing for and she said:
"I've been drawing ever since I can remember... The best memory I have was when I drew the cover of the VHS tape of "Pearl Harbour". (I was 13 and Josh Hartnett was my boo). From then on, I remember carrying a sketchbook and pencil wherever I went. I'd literally sit on the sidewalk and just sketch out whatever I saw; scenic views, hot dog stands, anything really. I took art classes in high school and even took a stab at a couple university level classes. Once I had enough courage to post a couple sketches on my Instagram and had positive feedback, there was no looking back!
What is your dream for Poked by Pam?
Honestly, I just love the idea of people wanting my art on their bodies forever. That honour is enough. As for the future of Poked by Pam, I hope for success. Ultimately, real success in business only matters if you have the right attitude and develop values around what you can do every day to make that dream a reality. As long as I am passionate about art and dedicated to working hard, everything else will just fall into place.
If you could tattoo anyone (even a celebrity) who would it be?
He’s passed away now, but I would definitely want to tattoo my grandpa. He wasn’t a tattoo artist, but an artist all the same. He painted scenic landscapes and had the same passion for art as I do. I bet he’d love to see how far tattooing has come!
What made you start tattooing?
I was on Facebook one day, scrolling through random videos and came across this elderly Filipino woman by the name of Whang-Od. An 89 year old woman who dedicated her life to tattooing. She is said to be the last Kalinga mambabatok or tattoo artist living in the village of Buscalan, Philippines.
She has spent her entire life doing something that she loves. Something that means so much to her. I was inspired. She inspired me to do what I’ve always loved to do, except with a needle, ink, and skin! If you asked me how I’d want to live out the rest of my life, it would be in her footsteps.
Getting my tattoo done by stick and poke
The day I got my tattoo I wasn't really nervous. I like to think I have a high pain tolorence but in seriousness I was super pumped to finally get my camera tattoo done by stick and poke. I like to think it was meant to be since I was thinking it was time to get the camera tattooed but not sure where I was going to get it done. I saw a while back about stick and poke and really wanted to try it so when I saw Pam was doing it I knew it was time!
Pam drew a few different variations and I picked my favourite one. She stencilled it on and when we found the proper area she took out the needle and ink and gave one poke to show it it would feel. I dint feel anything in fact it was soothing! And so began the intricate patient process of poking the tattoo in to place.
The Final Product
I am so unbelievably happy with my tattoo! The healing time was super quick too! pam placed this awesome clear bandaid on my tattoo so I could see it right after it was done and after 1 week I removed it and it was almost healed! I put some non scented lotion on it to moisturize it.
What was super cool about all of this is that we brought tattooing back to its roots of the original stick and poke. I also got a camera tattoo obviously my passion and Pam was in her element in the process of building her passion! What a truly amazing experience! Plus you know me I love supporting woman that are chasing their dreams!!! I am going to go back soon to get my next tattoo which is a palm tree! if you are interested in getting a stick and poke tattoo let me know!
