After what seemed like 8 wineries and 6 hours of driving, we finally arrived in beautiful Grand Forks!
Why Grand Forks? well my step Dad's brother owns a fruit farm that we wanted to visit but also it provided a beautiful back drop to relax with my sister in law before she gets married in September! We were also pretty excited when we found out our other sister in law was going to join us!
We were greeted by a beautiful woman named Natasha on her gorgeous property in Grand Forks. Her property is secluded and surrounded by peaceful landscapes and the Kettle river. She also has a vegetable garden where she grows her own organic veggies and serves them to her guests for breakfast!
A five minute walk from the Guesthouse is a sandy beach on the beautiful meandering Kettle River. Christina Lake, the warmest tree-lined lake in BC is only a 15 minute drive. There you can enjoy the sandy beaches, rainbow trout and spawning salmon. The tranquil beauty of the lake attracts tourists from all over the world. Natasha's Guesthouse has an interesting history. It was originally built as a service station for the trains that used to pass through the Kettle River Valley. There has been a lot of restorations and renovations utilizing reclaimed timber and other non-synthetic materials to preserve original appearance and heritage of the main house and the outbuildings.
We stayed in Natasha's summer house which is a small safe wood cabin with a little kitchen. bathroom, eating nook and a bedroom with.. wait for it.. BUNK BEDS! The Summer House is shaded by the many large trees on our property. Her beautiful flower garden is her pride and it is just a few steps away.
Natasha loves to cook so you will not be disappointed with your hearty breakfast!!! every morning we were served a healthy shake along with different traditional Russian dishes! I asked Natasha for a special request for one night for dinner and she lovingly obliged and boy was it good! She made us Borscht - traditional Russian beet, cabbage, and tomato soup. The flavour is enhanced by the garlic, dill, and parsley, which give it richness.
The second day we travelled up to Owl Mountain Ranch - just 15 minutes away from Grand Forks located in Cristina lake. There we met Rick who was the owner and guide - we pretty much decided he was Rick from the Walking Dead because he rode a horse down the train tracks like a boss and used a macheti on the bushes. We did the Cascade Canyon tour which includes a rest stop at the Cascade Falls viewing site. These trails have varying terrain with hills, rocky slopes, and some narrow pathways.
The third day we visited Uncle Terry's Apple Farm! There we picked cherries drank some good ol Apple Juice and some fresh blueberry muffins yum!
We also visited Cristina Lake ( the beach side) one day and just relaxed! Most of out time was just chilling out and enjoying all the beautiful nature that surrounded us.
We made sure to go on lots of walks, pick berries and just take it all in!
Thank you Grand Forks for being everything we imagined and more. I know for myself it made me realize how often I travel to other countries searching for some beautiful landscapes... while all this time this was just here... this little bit of heaven <3
